Few companies in the domestic oil and gas sector have weathered shifting energy trends as steadily as Gulf Coast Western. The Dallas-based firm has spent decades pulling reserves from the ground across six states while adjusting its methods as the market around it shifted. Its endurance owes much to the man at the helm.

Matthew Fleeger took over as president and chief executive after his father built the company from a small regional operation into a firm with reach across Texas, Louisiana, Colorado, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Mississippi. Fleeger studied business at Southern Methodist University, focusing on finance and marketing, before spending several years working for Texas companies, including his father’s.

A Career Before Oil

Before returning to lead Gulf Coast Western, Fleeger built and sold MedSolutions Inc., a medical waste disposal business he founded in 1993. He negotiated its sale to Stericycle in 2007 for roughly fifty-nine million dollars, a deal that proved his ability to grow a company from the ground floor. He also helped launch Palm Beach Tan and Mystic Tan, two indoor tanning chains that later became among the largest in their industry.

Returning to Family Roots

Fleeger’s background in acquisitions, partnerships, and corporate structuring made him a natural fit to run the family business once he came back. Under his direction, Gulf Coast Western has pursued joint ventures and acquired thousands of acres of productive land, using selective criteria to target properties with strong growth potential.

The company relies on networks and partnerships across the Gulf Coast region to acquire oil and gas reserves efficiently, and Fleeger’s varied business background has shaped how those partnerships are pursued and managed. His willingness to apply lessons learned from unrelated industries, from waste management to indoor tanning, has given Gulf Coast Western an approach to growth that differs from many of its peers in oil and gas extraction. That difference has helped the firm expand its footprint while other operators struggled with cost pressures and shrinking margins across the broader industry.
