Michael Polk spent decades at the helm of some of the world’s largest consumer goods companies. His resume includes stints driving transformation at Procter & Gamble, Kraft Foods, Unilever, and Newell Brands, where he served as CEO from 2011 to 2019. After briefly retiring, Polk expected to step back from the pressures of corporate leadership. Instead, he found himself drawn back in this time to a very different kind of company.

A Shift Toward Private Ownership

In 2020, Berkshire Partners invited Michael Polk Newell Brands to lead transformation efforts at Implus LLC, a fitness accessories portfolio company. The opportunity was unlike anything in his prior career. Where Polk once managed organizations of more than 50,000 employees, he now operated in a leaner, faster-moving environment. The shift turned out to be exactly what he was looking for.

What Polk discovered at Implus was that smaller, privately owned businesses create conditions that accelerate professional growth in ways large public companies simply cannot replicate. Junior employees are handed real responsibility early. Senior leaders act as player-coaches rather than distant decision-makers. Everyone is closer to the work and more directly accountable for outcomes. For Polk, this environment reignited his passion for the craft of business building.

Doing the Work Directly

One of the defining differences Polk describes is how he now spends his time. Rather than allocating resources and navigating organizational layers to influence outcomes, he works directly with his team on brand development and commercial strategy. “I am right there with them in the crucible, helping them make the choices that are going to drive our business forward,” Polk has said. That hands-on involvement echoes his early career as a marketing and sales executive and it is what makes this chapter of his professional life feel, as he puts it, like the “time of his professional life.” Refer to this article, for related information.
