Numbers offer a quick way to measure Dr. Andrew Jacono’s charitable work. The New York facial plastic surgeon has reconstructed the faces of more than 100 domestic violence survivors and operated on more than 750 children in developing regions. He has done this alongside a busy Park Avenue practice.

More than 100 survivors. That figure comes from FACE TO FACE, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery’s pro bono program for people with facial injuries from abuse. He serves as senior advisor.

More than 750 children. These patients were treated through missions with Healing the Children, the HUGS (Help Us Give Smiles) Foundation, and THAI Children. They had cleft lip and palate, microtia, facial tumors, or burn scars.

Trips, Years, and Peaks

Two missions per year. That is his usual pace for international work, with destinations including Colombia, Ecuador, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Nine years. That is how long he chaired ABOUT FACE: MAKING CHANGES, an annual benefit supporting domestic violence survivors.

Three mountains. Dr. Andrew Jacono has climbed Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Cotopaxi in Ecuador, and Elbrus in Russia to raise money for survivors and for children needing surgery.

Dates Worth Noting

2006: The Center for the Women of New York presented him with a “Good Guy” Award for advocacy and pro bono work.

2011: Facing Trauma debuted on Discovery Fit & Health, following his reconstructive surgeries on abuse survivors and trauma patients. The series later aired on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

He has also been commended in the Congressional Record by U.S. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy for contributions to women’s welfare.

Statistics cannot fully capture what changes for a patient after surgery. A child kept out of school by a cleft may now attend. A survivor who saw her abuse in the mirror every day may no longer have to. Those outcomes are what drew a young medical student to this work after he watched one girl’s life improve following her own reconstruction. Refer to this article for related information.
